Really amazing piece of history. The reconstruction of the ship is partial the is still original sections. You can walk thru the vessel and see what it was like to be on it with her 13 monster cannons. There is also a really nice museum with artifacts recovered during the salvage.
The Cairo Museum is really interesting. You can walk on the ship and see how it worked. There is also a museum indoors that has a lot of items that were recovered when the ship was brought up from the Mississippi river bottom. I would definitely recommend stopping and checking it out.
Free with park fee. Lots of original items recovered from the boat. You'll spend at least 20 minutes here. Good place for restroom stop while in the park. Nice parking lot and next to cemetery.
This was a place I have wanted to visit for a long time and it didn't dissapoint. They let you get on the only remaining city class gun boat! It has a nice museum right next to it, which is all about iron class and sailors. Plus picnic tables scattered around to eat at.
This river boat would be a very unwelcoming sight to see if you were in the CSA Navy. I can imagine men abandoning ship after spotting the USS Cairo coming down the river. Now it is preserved and folks during our time can walk through USS Cairo and around it and see original meshed with perfect restoration, and you can see there is a boundary between what is original and what is reconstructed. The original ship boilers are included, the entire hull is a museum! Its an open area around the USS Cairo, so you can imagine and see where and how the mine sunk this vessel.
